D-Fuse have been commissioned to create and perform a contemporary visual performance of Holst's The Planets at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast with the Ulster Orchestra as part of the Belfast Festival. Holst's The Planets was considered modern at the time of its first incomplete performance in 1918 and in 1926 Holst said the piece was "a series of mood pictures." The Planets is a testament to the modern movement developing in Europe at the time (as represented by such visual artists as Klee, Mondrian and Kandinsky).
This performance brings this ambitious suite into the 21st century, taking the audience on a journey from micro to macro, spanning from human emotion to outer space. Working with Alvaro [Actop] and Tom Wall [BlinkLab], D-Fuse have created a series of pieces that embrace the majesty of space juxtaposed with the depth of human emotion and the complexity of global issues, putting a contemporary spin on Holst's The Planets and underscoring its impact and relevancy to society today.
