Report on Conscientious Objectors is a film made by D-Fuse, commissioned for Hacking the Archives as part of the Being Human Festival of the Humanities in London
The film is an archival fiction based on the Report on Conscientious Objectors, which was drawn up in 1940 by Mass Observation, a UK-based social research organisation initially operating from 1937 to the 1960s. Extracts from this report are collaged together with images from the archive of the Ministry of Information, which was responsible for propaganda during World War II. The combinations of images and fragments of text that have been stripped from their original context create a non-linear narrative that examines issues such as class, colonialism, patriotism and gender stereotypes.
